Things to Do at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park

The Royal Gorge Bridge is the headline, but the park around it packs a full day of things to do – a rim-to-rim gondola, two of Colorado's more serious thrill rides, a guided cliff climb, a theater show and a children's play area. Here is what each one is and who it suits.

The bridge

The Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the United States, its deck about 956 feet above the Arkansas River. You can walk the wooden deck between its two steel towers, feel it move gently underfoot, and look straight down into the canyon through gaps in the planks. A golf-cart shuttle crosses for anyone who would rather ride than walk. Walking the bridge is included with general admission.

The aerial gondola

The gondola carries you about 2,400 feet across the gorge, high above the river, with a few quiet minutes to take in the canyon from the air. One of the three cabins has a glass floor; it draws a separate, slower queue, so many visitors ride a standard cabin out and the glass-floor cabin back. Gondola rides are included with admission and run when weather allows.

The Cloudscraper Zip Line

The Cloudscraper flies riders rim to rim across the canyon, roughly a thousand feet above the river, for a fast, open-air crossing with nothing but air below. It is an extra-fee ride with height and weight limits, and it closes in the deepest part of winter for annual inspection. This one is for confident thrill-seekers rather than nervous first-timers.

The Royal Rush Skycoaster

The Royal Rush Skycoaster sits right on the edge of the gorge and swings riders out over the drop after a free-fall launch – the rim location is what makes it feel bigger than a fairground ride. Like the zip line it is an extra-fee attraction with restrictions, and it pauses for winter maintenance.

The Via Ferrata

The Royal Gorge Via Ferrata is a guided climb on iron rungs and cables bolted into the canyon wall, taking small groups down onto the granite for views most visitors never reach. It is suitable for ages 12 and up, with a minimum weight requirement, and is booked separately – the fee includes park admission. Routes are tailored from beginner to more advanced, and trained guides handle the safety system throughout.

The Plaza Theater and playland

The Plaza Theater runs a short film on the history of the bridge and the gorge alongside a birds-of-prey show, a good way to rest and learn between rides. Younger visitors head for the enclosed, multi-story playland with ropes, slides, tunnels and a splash pad, plus a carousel, a gem-sluicing station and a musket-mine game nearby. The theater and playland are included with admission and are the calm heart of a family visit.

Food on site

There are several places to eat without leaving the park, from a café perched above the canyon to a barbecue spot with a bridge view, plus seasonal snack stands. You are also welcome to bring your own food to the picnic areas.

How to fit it into a day

A first-time visit built around the bridge, the gondola and the theater fills a comfortable half day; add the Via Ferrata or a couple of the rim rides and you have a full one. Because the two-day ticket lets you return, splitting the calm attractions and the thrill rides across two mornings is an easy way to beat both the heat and the lines.
